Why should I attend this conference?

PWA is campus-affiliated support group that offers opportunities for professional development and networking throughout the year that culminates in our annual day-long conference during spring quarter. PWA aims to promote equity by providing opportunities for women to meet, connect, and learn together. We believe a strong network of professionals advocating for women is an essential part of the UC Santa Barbara campus community and the Santa Barbara community as a whole.  Our goals for this conference are to provide:

  • Opportunities to network with other professionals at UC Santa Barbara and the local community.
  • Programming that challenges us to reflect, learn, and grow at work and in our personal lives
  • Time to focus on our own learning and growth
  • FUN! Laughter!  And a sense of community

Keynote Speaker

Maritza Mejia '02

Maritza Mejia has worked in Student Affairs for over 16 years and has a background in activism, social justice, and educational equity. She holds a B.A. in Global Studies from UC Santa Barbara and a Master's in Public Administration from Cal State Northridge. Over the course of her time as a staff member at UCSB, Maritza held various positions in Student Affairs, most notably, serving as the Associate Director for Orientation Programs.

Maritza’s work in the community has been focused on helping underrepresented students access college and achieve academic success. In support of California Assembly Bill 540, Maritza served as a founding board member of the AB 540 Coalition of Santa Barbara, a group of local educators from public schools, community organizations, parents and students, whose mission is to create social change by empowering AB 540 students, parents and allies with the information and tools necessary to access higher education.

In 2010, Maritza was one of the four founding members of the Adsum Education Foundation (Adsum translates from Latin to “I am here”) which raises money for undocumented Santa Barbara County students to pursue higher education. To date, the Adsum Foundation has provided more than half a million dollars in scholarships. In 2012, she received the Santa Barbara Independent Local Heroes Award in recognition of her work with the Adsum Foundation. Maritza is also an alumna of the Katherine Harvey Fellows Program, and has served on the boards of Leading From Within and the Planned Parenthood Central Coast affiliate.
